GM debuts new air bag, lane departure system
One of them — the first of its kind to be brought to market — is GM's centermount front airbag. Designed to protect driver and front-seat passenger from head, neck and thorax injuries in side impact crashes, the new airbag will be available on 2013 Buick, Chevrolet and GMC midsize crossovers.The 2 1/2-pound brick or airbag receptacle is mounted in the right side of the driver's seatback. In a side impact crash, it inflates in a figure-8, upward to cover neck and head areas, and down and slightly around the driver's chest. It addresses the safety of both persons in the front seat, with a focus on the person across the vehicle from the point of impact.
Developed with supplier Takata, GM's front center airbag is a response to serious injuries and fatalities from far-side impact crashes.These crashes accounted for 11 percent of the belted front occupant fatalities in non-rollover impacts between 2004 and 2009 involving 1999 model year or newer vehicles, GM reported.Bag of fish shuts down airport baggage claim.No price was available for the front center airbag, but GM has put a $295 tag on its new camera-based lane departure and rear-end collision warning system. The system will be available on 2012 GMC Terrain and Chevrolet Equinox compact utility vehicles as new-model production before the end of the year.
The passive crash-avoidance safety system warns the driver on a small screen directly above the center-mounted information screen. When turned on, the system shows green "vehicle detected" and "lane departure warning" car icons. If the driver is closing in too rapidly on the vehicle ahead, a flashing red "forwards collision alert" and eight quick beeps signal the need to quickly apply the brakes.If the driver is drifting into another lane or onto the shoulder of the road, the lane departure posts amber "lane departure warning" icons accompanied by warning chimes.
